Where 120 g comes from
USDA FoodData Central: 1 cup unsifted of “Sugars, powdered” = 120 g. FDC 169656
King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart (“Confectioners' sugar (unsifted)”): 113 g per cup. Chart
This page uses 120 g (USDA). The two sources differ by 7 g (5.83%): that gap is about how firmly the cup is filled, not an error in either.
Powdered (confectioners' or icing) sugar is very light: 120 g a cup unsifted in USDA's data, 113 g by King Arthur, and 100 g if sifted first. It contains a little cornstarch to stop it caking.
How to measure powdered sugar by the cup
Stir it to loosen, spoon it into a dry measuring cup until heaped, then sweep the top level with the back of a knife. Do not tap or press the cup.
In the UK and Australia: icing sugar. Metric cups there hold 250 ml, so a metric cup of powdered sugar weighs about 127 g.
